James Dylan Cook Cooney, Esq. is a dedicated attorney whose career reflects a longstanding commitment to public service and advocacy. Born and raised in Broward, James pursued his undergraduate studies at Florida International University, where he began building his legal foundation early. During this time, he interned with the Broward County Public Defender’s Office, gaining firsthand exposure to criminal defense work. Simultaneously, he worked for years as a case manager on personal injury cases, developing practical experience in client relations, case development, and the day-to-day realities of legal practice while earning his bachelor’s degree. Over two years of this time was spent as a case manager at Long & Jean where he handled cases from the very first phone call with a client to handing them their settlement check.
He went on to attend St. Thomas University College of Law, where he graduated with honors. While in law school, James broadened his legal experience through multiple prestigious internships, including positions with the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, again with the Broward County Public Defender’s Office, and the Third District Court of Appeal under Judge Alexander S. Bokor. While at St. Thomas College of Law, James would return to Long & Jean, keeping his skills and knowledge of personal injury sharp and continuing to help clients. He was also an active member of the law school’s trial team, competing and honing his courtroom advocacy skills. James continues his involvement, volunteering his time to mentor current students. Following graduation, James returned to Broward County to join Long & Jean as an Associate Attorney, where he leverages his extensive background in personal injury law to effectively represent and advocate for his clients.
Outside of his legal practice, James lives with his wife and Yorkie. He is an avid reader of fantasy and science fiction, enjoys playing video games, and spends time camping—a passion rooted in his years with the Boy Scouts, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
